Some kidnappers who abducted a medical doctor in Auchi, Edo State, and murdered his younger brother have been arrested. They were arrested after the doctor reportedly identified them when they brought their children to the specialist hospital where he worked in Auchi for treatment.
Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, the former victim, recognised them as members of the gang that abducted him weeks earlier. Hospital authorities were alerted, and security personnel moved in to apprehend the suspects, who were subsequently handed over to the police. Edo State Police Public Relations Officer,
ASP Eno Ikoedem, who confirmed the story said the police had earlier arrested another suspect linked to the abduction, before the latest development.
Ikoedem further said that the first breakthrough occurred on February 3, when operatives of the Auchi Division, working with local hunters and vigilante groups, arrested one Saminu Kawujie during a bush-combing operation in Warake Forest. Items recovered from him included two knives, two mobile phones, a UBA ATM card, and ₦20,250 in cash. An identification parade was later conducted, and he was identified as one of the doctor’s abductors.
She noted that two additional suspects, identified as Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar, were arrested on February 8 at the hospital premises following intelligence-led operations.
“Both suspects have been identified as part of the gang that abducted Dr. Babatunde on January 2, 2026, even as Idris Abubakar was identified as the person who collected the ransom money for the doctor’s release,” Ikoedem added.
