The fire incident started at about 10.15 am at the Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri, when it was noticed that smoke was billowing out from the roof of the building.
Military sources said that although office materials including sensitive documents and property were evacuated, there was initial panic as soldiers on duty suspected sabotage by the enemy.
The cause of the fire was however, traced to electrical fault, from the ceiling.
Borno State is among the states in the Northwest where troops have been fighting terrorism in the last 15 years.
Before the fire incident, the major cause for concern was scorpion and snake bites which are common occurrences during heat periods in Maiduguri.
The sources said, "At about 10:15 am today, an unfortunate incident happened. The 7 Division Records Office in Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri caught fire, but to God be the glory. The office materials and property were evaluated safely and successfully.
"With the quick response of the fire brigade team the inferno was put on check. Only the entire roofing was burnt while other property attached to the building from outside were saved.
"The cause of fire outbreak according to eye witnesses was said to be electrical problems from the ceiling, as smoke was seen coming from the ceiling before being discovered to be fire outbreak.
"Electrical problems, scorpions and snake bites are common occurrence during the heat periods in Maiduguri, Borno State."
