PDP BoT Rises Above Crisis, Reaffirms Unity and Party Supremacy
The Board of Trustees, BoT, of the  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has reaffirmed the unity, strength, and internal cohesion of the party following its emergency meeting held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, in Abuja.
In a communiqué read by the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, the party’s highest advisory organ expressed full confidence in the Amb Iliya Damagum-led National Working Committee, NWC, and commended the collective efforts of the PDP Governors Forum, the National Convention Organizing Committee, and other organs of the party for their stabilizing roles as preparations for the Elective National Convention intensify.
The BoT noted with satisfaction the ruling of the Oyo State High Court presided over by Justice A.L. Akintola, which affirmed the constitutional right of the PDP to manage its internal affairs, including the conduct of its 2025 Elective National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State capital. The Board described the judgment as a “victory for democracy, rule of law, and political development” in Nigeria.
However, the BoT expressed deep concern over recent developments within the party, including public altercations and the invasion of the National Secretariat, describing such incidents as uncharacteristic of the PDP’s democratic culture and values.
As the conscience and moral compass of the party, the BoT pledged to remain neutral and focused on protecting the integrity of the PDP, emphasizing that reconciliation is not a mark of weakness but an act of maturity and responsibility.
To this end, the BoT announced the constitution of a high-powered reconciliation committee charged with immediately engaging all conflicting interests and restoring unity ahead of the national convention. The committee, chaired by Amb Hassan Adamu Wakilin Adamawa and with Chief Mike Oghiadomhe as Secretary.. The committee is expected to submit its report on the 11th of November 2025.
Political observers have lauded the BoT for its timely intervention, noting that its decision to avoid taking sides demonstrates maturity and foresight at a time the party requires cohesion and focus.
Of particular significance is the BoT’s recognition of the Oyo High Court judgment, which clearly delineates jurisdictional competence in contrast to the earlier ruling by Justice Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. While both courts are of coordinate jurisdiction, Justice A.L. Akintola properly assumed jurisdiction since both the plaintiff and the venue of the convention are within Ibadan, Oyo State.
Legal experts have pointed out that Justice Omotosho did not stop the PDP convention but merely advised the party to reconcile its internal issues before proceeding. Conversely, Justice Akintola issued a consequential order because the plaintiff before him had clear locus standi, having purchased nomination forms and receipts to contest the position of Deputy National Organizing Secretary.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is expected to align fully with the Akintola ruling and the Supreme Court’s established position affirming party supremacy and the right of political parties to manage their internal affairs.
Meanwhile, the application for an interlocutory order scheduled for hearing on November 10, 2025, is a sign that if granted the ex parte Order which lasts for 14 days might extend the order until the final determination of the substantive suit. By judicial precedent, courts do not adjudicate on matters already concluded.
With this decisive move by the BoT, the PDP appears poised to surmount its internal distractions, reaffirm its unity, and proceed with a successful national convention that will further strengthen its democratic foundations and readiness for future electoral contests.
