Before the death of Mary Habila, a health worker died in the Works Minister and former governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi's residence, five engineers working on an African Development Bank, AfDB, project had been killed in Ebonyi State in bizarre circumstances.
The NELAN consultant engineers who were abducted at Effium Community on November 3, 2021, while Umahi held sway as governor vanished into thin air. They were reportedly killed for "refusing," to part with some percentage of the contract sum of the AfDB project with some top officials of Ebonyi State Government. The NELAN Engineers had got the contracts for the African Development Bank-backed Abakaliki Ring Road Project, stretching through
Effium Community, in the state.
NELAN Contractors had got the job without help from any Ebonyi State Government official and had made it known that they were not ready to part with their money as nobody influenced AfDB in giving them the contract. The NELAN engineers were then invited to the Government House for ceremonies marking the commemoration of the project. A team was appointed to lead the five consultants. On November 3, 2021, the NELAN Engineers set out for the journey but were abducted alongside the members of the government team and "quietly killed." They dead consultants included Engineers Nelson Onyemeh - Lead Consultant/Partner, NELAN; Ernest Edeani; Ikechukwu Ejiofor; Samuel Aneke and Stanley Nwazulum. All the engineers and the team members vanished and all their vehicles and equipment also vanished into thin air.
The claim was that the engineers went for an official meeting arranged by the state government and were abducted by armed men
The former Governor David Umahi announced at a State Exco meeting that “the 5 engineers have been killed and buried in the bush by Ezza warriors” even while police/DSS investigation was still ongoing
Families later alleged that the DSS officer handling the case was suddenly removed and his laptop with evidence confiscated
As of this year, the families are still saying they have no official confirmation or bodies, and have petitioned the Presidency and NASS for a fresh probe
The wives of the engineers rejected attempts to blame it only on "communal crisis," saying it was linked to official project engagements.
