N110billion Fraud: Former Kogi Gov Yahaya Bello, Others Remanded In EFCC Custody Till December 10
Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, known as White Lion, remanded by EFCC till December 10, 2024, over alleged N110 billion fraud. Bail ruling pending.
Embattled former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, a.k.a White Lion, and two others have been remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, till December 10, 2024, following their arraignment on Wednesday on charges of fraud to the tune of over N110 billion by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
The court presided over by Justice Maryann Anenih, fixed the date for ruling in the bail applications by Bello and ttwo other defendants.
After taking arguments for and against the bail request by Bello’s Counsel, Joseph Bodunde Dauda, SAN, and EFCC’s counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, Justice Anenih adjourned the matter till December 10, and remanded the accused persons in the EFCC custody.
Bello’s Counsel had pleaded with the court to admit the former governor to bail on various grounds among others, adding that the law presumes an accused person innocent until contrary was established by the anti-graft agency.
Daudu further noted that Bello was not a flight risk as, according to him, the former two-term governor had not travelled out of the country in the past seven years, pointing out that the accused person
would also, not interfere with witnesses and exhibits given that EFCC had already completed its investigation and filed charges against the defendants.
Opposing the application Pinheiro argued that Bello may likely interfere with the witnesses and exhibits.
After the submissions, Justice Anenih announced that she would rule on the matter on December 10 and ordered that the three defendants be remanded in the EFCC custody until the rulings were delivered.
The two other defendants, Umar Shoaib Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, had earlier been admitted to administrative bail by EFCC while Bello appeared before the court for the first time on Wednesday.
