Drama As Monarch Storms Out Of Court Over Alleged Derogatory Questions By Lawyer

There was drama at an Enugu Customary Court last week week, when a traditional ruler stormed out of court, alleging that a lawyer did not show respect to him.
The traditional ruler of Odunogwu, Igogoro, Enugu Ezike, in Igboeze North Local Government Area, Igwe David Agada, was a witness in a case of abduction of an 11- year old girl by his biological father, Onyeka Onyeke.
The girl who was under the custody of her mother, Madam Perpetual Onyinye Ossai, when she was reportedly abducted. Perpetual was married to Onyeke but the marriage broke down. It was however, alleged that the girl who was staying with her grandmother at Ufuga, Igogoro, was sent on an errand  to collect a handset at Ubia in a nearby Isiugwu when her father abducted her on the way.
However, Igwe Agada was in court to give evidence about what transpired when the report of abduction of the girl was made in his palace, following which the monarch said that he sent for the defendant and called him twice but he refused to either come or take his calls, hence he advised those who reported the abduction to report the incident to both the Neighbourhood Watch vigilante group and the police for proper investigation and apprehension of the culprits.
After the first question, the plaintiff's Counsel, Barrister Emmanuel Abugu, against asked the monarch how normally treated serious cases like abduction if such cases were reported to him in the palace following which Agada noted that he usually advised such complaints to take their cases to the police. It was in an attempt by the lawyer to extract some words on what the monarch would do as a person when such grievously offences were reported  to him that he interjected angrily, accusing the lawyer of asking him belittling questions before storming out of the court hall.
Attempts by the Chairman of the Customary Court, Barrister Wilfred Ojobor to assuage Igwe Agada's feeling and make him answer the question put to him by the lawyer proved abortive and the matter was adjourned to December 10, 2025. The matter had earlier been heard on November 6, November 12 and November 26, 2025.
Chairman of the court, Barrister Ojobor, however, warned that Igwe Agada's evidence would be erased from the court's records if he failed to come on the adjourned date to complete his evidence and urged the lawyer to prevail on the monarch to appear for continuation of his evidence.
