Atiku Camp Questions Lack Of Transparency, Suspicions Surrounding Tinubu’s Turkey Trip
The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised questions over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing trip to Turkey, following what they described as the Presidency’s “habitual silence” on the duration and specifics of the president’s frequent travels.
The question marks were raised on Monday in a statement signed by the Atiku's Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Paul Ibe,
He questioned the transparency surrounding Tinubu’s state visit to the Republic of Turkey, accusing the Presidency of deliberately withholding critical information from Nigerians.
President Tinubu recently returned from France, after 20 days of absence.
According to the statement posted on his official Facebook page, Ibe noted d
that President Tinubu departed Abuja on Sunday, January 25, 2026, for what was described as a multi-day diplomatic engagement in Turkey, adding however, that the official statement issued a day earlier by the Presidency merely confirmed the President’s departure without stating how long the visit would last or when he was expected back in the country, except that, Tinubu would return “at the conclusion of the visit.”
He pointed out such a phrase had become a familiar but troubling pattern whenever the President travels abroad.
“Atiku’s camp finds it suspicious that the Presidency repeatedly avoids clearly stating the President’s return date.
“The consistent refusal to give timelines fuels unnecessary speculation and deepens public mistrust,” Ibe said, suggesting that the practice raised questions about transparency, accountability and the right of Nigerians to be fully informed about the movements of their elected leader.
He also, argued that in a democracy, the public deserves more than vague assurances, especially regarding the whereabouts and engagements of the President.
While the Presidency has said Tinubu’s visit is aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Turkey, it has so far not released a detailed itinerary or schedule of activities, further feeding the concerns raised by the Atiku camp.
As of the time of this report, the Presidency had not responded to the concerns raised by Atiku’s aide.
