President Bola Tinubu is to address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives to mark the Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The theme of this year's Democracy Day celebration is, “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing our Commitment to National Development.”
Tinubu's address will be delivered before both chambers of the National Assembly in Abuja even as the date holds deep significance in Nigeria’s political history as it commemorates the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll, won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola but annulled by the then military government of General Ibrahim Babangida, rtd.
A statement by the Spokesman of the House of Representatives’ Akin Rotimi, on Sunday, described June 12, as a moment of national reflection.
Rotimi further noted that Tinubu, who would serve as the Special Guest of Honour as well as deliver a keynote address to the lawmakers and the nation on the occasion which would feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, while the president is also expected to confer National Honours on selected legislators in recognition of their contributions to democratic development.
