Nsukka-------- No fewer than 500 households have been threatened by erosion occasioned by poor channelisation of water by various contractors handling the Ogrute - Umuogbo- Aji - Umuopu road in Igbo Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.
About four villages including Ogrute, Umuogili Eze, Umossai and Onaje Imufu are affected as the flood destroy farmlands even as animals like goats and sheep are also drowned each time it rained.
The poor channelisation of the the flood from the road and lack of drainages has led erosion to cut off the Ogrute - Imufu- Umuagama--- Umuogbo Agu Road, rendering other areas impassable.
The road was cut off before the branch office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and St Mary's Nursery and Primary Schools owned by the Catholic Church.
Apart, from the institutions, the erosion menace from Nkpamte and Ekposhi axis has also caused a lot of damage to St. Stephen's Anglican Church as well as the General Hospital, Enugu Ezike and another private hospital their perimeter walls had fallen off.
An 80 year old resident of the area, Mr Jacob Abugu, told Southeast Post that the flood water had caused the people a lot of havoc.
Abugu, who has a shop in front of his house, said customers were hard to come by as only pedestrians and motorcyclists now ply the road.
Both the St. Mary's Nursery and Primary Schools and the INEC offices were desolate as few people appear to have visited the places in the last few months.
The Chairman of Igbo Eze North Local Government, Engr William Ejike Itodo, recently spoke of challenges being faced by the local government in the area of erosion menace especially around the Ogrute - Umuogbo road axis,as flood
water from the areas cause untold hardship to the people of Umuossai, Umu Ogilieze and Onaje Imufu, destroying farm lands and crops in the process.
