Why South- East Senate Caucus Calls For Wide Consultation On Tinubu's Tax Reform Bills
The South-East Senate Caucus, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, calls for wider consultations on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, emphasizing the need for stakeholder and constituent input before passage.
The South-East Senate Caucus has called for wide consultations on President Bola Tinubu's controversial tax reform bills now before the National Assembly.
The Senate caucus urged wider consultations before the passage of the bills, noting the need for constituents, stakeholders to be consulted.
According to the senators on Monday, the resolution followed a closed-door meeting of senators from the five South-East states, held in the office of their leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South).
Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Abaribe, however, noted that the south east senators did not oppose the proposed tax reforms, but believed that more extensive engagement with stakeholders was necessary.
His words, “As senators from the South-East, we are not against the Tax Reform Bills. However, we insist on wider consultations with our constituents across the 15 senatorial districts, state governments, and other critical stakeholders in our zone.
“We have reviewed the bills and feel it is essential to share our insights with stakeholders in the South-East to ensure the final framework reflects equity and addresses regional concerns. Consultation is vital for inclusiveness and effective legislation.
“Specifically, we need to consult with our constituents across the 15 senatorial districts in the zone, with our state governments, and with other critical stakeholders."
There had been controversies over the proposed tax bills with calls for the review of their provisions especially in the area of the sharing formula, with northerners and their governors rejecting the plan, insisting that such would be disadvantageous to the region.
