Threats To Life: Peter Obi Cries Out Over Safety Of Self, Family

Former governor of Anambra State and the
Labour Party’s  presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Gregory Obi, says that his recent New Year message addressing Nigeria’s current challenges has triggered threats to his life, family, as well as friends and associates.

Obi spoke during interaction with reporters  last Thursday, noting grave concerns about the country’s deteriorating political, economic, and security landscapes.
He further said that security and economic conditions were worsening daily under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, even as the Federal Government has maintained that Obi's observations sharply contrasted with the situation on the ground.
According to Obi, Nigeria has experienced significant economic decline, pointing out also that, the nation, once Africa’s largest economy with a GDP of $574 billion and a per capita income of over $3,500 in 2014, had now fallen to fourth place on the continent.
But, responding to Obi's allegations, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,  criticized Obi’s remarks in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
Morka dismissed Obi's assertions describing the claims as misleading and overly pessimistic.
He further said that, Obi was.painting a bleak and inaccurate picture of the country’s security and economic situations, pointing out that economic indicators showed signs of recovery.
This was even as tensions escalated further when Obi, via a post on X on Monday, revealed that Morka accused him of “crossing the line” and warned him of potential consequences.
The former Anambra governor expressed alarm over the threats, adding that his commitment to truth and constructive criticism has seemingly provoked authoritarian reactions.
His words, "Have I really crossed the line? “My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. While I have received all sorts of messages, Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of ‘crossing the line’ and has warned that I will face the consequences.
“We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed."
He then, asked Nigerians to work towards building a freer and more democratic society for future generations.
