A 35 - year old driver, Emmanuel Evaristus Ejiofor Enwe is dire need of help to restore his eyesight and prevent him from going completely blind.
Enwe, who is married and has three children is a native of Umopu, Enugu Ezike in Igbo Eze North Local Government of Enugu State needs approximately N5 million for the eye operation.
He had been requested to pay N3,777,000 for the eye operation at the Eye Foundation Hospital, in Lagos to restore his sight following a "Retinal Detachment," which has severely reduced his vision.
The patient was involved in an accident at Matthew Street, Ado Ekiti on May 11, 2024,
where he sustained fracture on his right leg as well as a detached retina. However, the issue of the detached retina was not immediately detected until recently even as the case of his fractured leg was handled by a bone- setter in Onitsha, Anambra State, then. After the hospitalisation for the bone setting at Onitsha, where he spent over N1 million, Enwe had nothing doing again other than to start life as a commercial motorcyclist, Okada. He was doing the Okada business until recently when he started experiencing poor vision, necessitating his visit the Nations Premium Eye Hospital, Nsukka in Enugu State, where the doctors told him he had "a detached retina," which resulted from the accident he had at Aldo Ekiti.
He was also, told that the problem of his bad eye sight can only be handled by three specialist hospitals in the country, but specifically recommended the Eye Foundation Hospital, Lagos for his treatment.
At the Eye Foundation Hospital, Enwe spent N480,000 for tests which confirmed that he actually had reduced vision, following his "detached right retina," and requested an upward payment of N3,870,000 for operation to correct the anomaly.
However, the bill dated June 6, 2025, does not include the cost of "medications" which "will be factored in after surgery," according to the Eye Foundation.
A breakdown of the N3,870,000 charged for the "Surgery For The Right Eye," include: Vitrectomy - silicon oil - N3,500,000; Procedural Anesthesia - N200,000; Lab test- M25,000; ECG - M25,000 and six Doses of Methotrexate Injection at N20,000 per dose amounting to N120,000 bringing the grand total to N3,870,000.This amount does not include feeding, transportation or other out of pocket expenses or N480,000 he borrowed for the tests at the Eye Foundation, which brought the cost so far to N4,350,000.
"I spent #480,000 for, tests at Eye Foundation. I spent over a million Naira for bone setting at Onitsha because of the fracture I sustained on my right leg. I am not doing anything now because I cannot
continue with my Okada work due to my fractured leg and poor visibility. I am pleading with good spirited individuals, philanthropists as well as the Chairman of my local government, Chief Michael Ogalla to come to my aid. I want to be strong to fend for my family and myself. My sight is very bad. There are other hidden charges because, the cost of drugs were not stated and there will be other routine tests for the surgery. I need between N4.5 million and N5 million to have a successful surgery and I count on the good spirited individuals to help. God will bless those who will help me in this venture. Despite the fact that I was poor, I had never imagined that I would beg money to survive," Enwe said in an interview
