The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke has pardoned Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a chicken and eggs in 2010.
This was contained in a Government House statement on Thursday, December 26, 2024, signed by a Spokesman to the governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed.
According to the statement, Adeleke exercised his prerogative of mercy towards 53 convicts in the Nigerian Correctional Service in line with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
Olowookere is one of the convicts recommended for outright pardon due to good conduct, despite being convicted of capital offenses.
Other convicts for capital offences pardoned included Sunday Morakinyo, Segun Olowokere, Tunde Olapade and Demola Odeyemi.
Furthermore, others convicted for capital offences who were pardoned on health grounds included Oluwafemi Fagbemi, Bewaji Sunday, Amehin George, Ayomide Arulogun, Taiwo Oluwatobi Stephen and Abubakar Abdulazeez.
However, the death sentence of Ojekunle Timothy, who had spent 10 years awaiting execution, was commuted to 15 years in custody.
