President Bola Tinubu has lamented the death of the Publisher of The Eagle Online and veteran journalist, Dotun Oladipo, describing his passing as a major loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the country.
Oladipo, a former Political Editor of The Punch newspaper, who was also a staff of the Newswatch Magazine, died at the age of 56.
In a condolence message on Wednesday, signed by Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president praised Oladipo’s contributions to political journalism and the development of Nigeria’s digital media space.
According to Tinubu, the late journalist’s career demonstrated the important role of the media in strengthening democracy through public enlightenment, accountability and robust discourse.
The president noted Oladipo’s transition from traditional journalism to digital publishing, noting that he founded The Eagle Online after his years of service at The Punch.
His words, “Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation. He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy."
Tinubu further said that Oladipo’s work in political reporting and online journalism would remain part of his professional legacy and extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, friends and well wishers just as he prayed for strength for those left to mourn him.
“I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” Tinubu added.
