Nigerians Pay N2.3trillion Ransom In 12 Months, Records 51.9 Million Crime Incidents
The NBS 2024 Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey reveals Nigerians paid ₦2.3 trillion in ransoms from May 2023 to April 2024, with 51.9 million crime incidents recorded nationwide, highlighting a deepening security crisis.
The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, says that Nigerians paid a humongous N2.3 trillion in ransom within 12 months even as 51.9 million crime incidents were recorded across the country within the same period.
The survey, covering May 2023 to April 2024, revealed that 65 per cent of households impacted by kidnappings paid ransoms, averaging N2.67 million per incident, just as an average of 51.9 million crime incidences were recorded across the country within the period under review.
The South-East reported the lowest number, with 6.2 million cases even as the rural areas experienced higher crime rates, with 26.5 million incidents compared to 25.4 million in urban centres.
Also, home robberies affected over 4.1 million households, even as only 36.3 per cent of victims reported these incidents to the police following alleged district in law enforcement and skepticisms over police efficiency.
The NBS further noted that 21.4 percent of Nigerian victims reported cases of phone theft accounting for 13.8 per cent of crime incidents.
According to the NBS, only half of the 90 per cent of victims who reported their cases to the police, expressed satisfaction with police responses, even as sexual
offences were another significant concern, affecting an estimated 1.4 million individuals.
