Democracy Day: EndBadGovernance Protesters Rock Lagos, Abuja: Demand Action On Insecurity, Hardship
Protesters on Friday flooded Abuja, Lagos, Oyo and Borno  streets on a renewed #EndBadGovernance demonstration. They demanded urgent government action on worsening economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment as well as rising cost of living.
In Unity Foundation, Abuja, rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, reportedly collapsed and was rushed to a hospital following a confrontation with the Nigerian police.  drew activists, civil society groups and concerned citizens who formed long processions across the two cities. Eye witnesses said at the scene of the incident that Sowore collapsed when security operatives moved to disperse the demonstrators,  firing cannisters of tear- gas towards the crowd
The demonstrators carried placards with inscriptions like “Take action On Insecurity and Inflation; Free All Captives Now; Create  Mass Employment; End Anti-People Policies Now; Nigerian Workers Need Living Wages and Need Creation Of Mass Employment.”
The Lagos protest came hours after coordinated mass abductions were reported in Oyo and Borno states.
Demonstrators urged authorities to tackle inflation, high transportation costs and declining purchasing power affecting millions of Nigerians.
Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana joined the protest, lending his voice to calls for reforms and improved governance.
Furthermore, activist Folarin Falana, a.k.a Falz, also participated in the demonstration and called on government to secure schools nationwide.
Falana had earlier declared June 12 a day of nationwide protest with several civil society organisations, citing concerns over insecurity, hunger and economic difficulties.
Meanwhile pro-government groups also held  counter-protests, marching with banners bearing “Better Days Ahead for Nigeria” and urging citizens to remain patient with ongoing economic and policy reforms.
They said the Tinubu administration’s measures were designed to place the country on a path of long-term economic recovery and sustainable growth.
There was chaos after security operatives, in an attempt to break the demonstration in Abuja and fired tear- gas causing the protesters to scamper for their safety.
Sowore was said to have regained consciousness as he was being taken to hospital but was eventually admitted for further examination and treatment.
