At least 89 migrants dead after boat capsizes off
At least 89 migrants perished and dozens remain missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Mauritania. This tragedy underscores the dangers faced by migrants desperately trying to reach Europe.
Mauritanian Coastguards recovered the bodies of 89 individuals, highlighting the perilous nature of this attempted journey. The sole survivors, a mere nine people, including a young girl of just five years old, offer a glimmer of hope amidst the overwhelming loss.
The boat, carrying a staggering 170 passengers, departed last week from the border region between Senegal and Gambia. Many migrants from West Africa view Mauritania as a crucial transit point on their harrowing trek towards Europe. The Canary Islands, a Spanish territory, represent the most common destination on this treacherous route.
Driven by desperation for a better life in Europe, migrants often undertake this dangerous voyage in overloaded and unseaworthy vessels. The Caminando Fronteras charity estimates that over 5,000 migrants tragically lost their lives attempting to reach Spain by sea in the first half of 2024 alone.
In a bid to address the escalating crisis, the European Union pledged €210 million in aid to Mauritania in April 2024. Nearly €60 million of this allocation is earmarked specifically for tackling undocumented migration towards Europe.
However, the effectiveness of such measures remains a topic of debate. While financial assistance plays a role, more comprehensive solutions are needed to address the root causes of migration, such as poverty and conflict, and to ensure safer passage for those seeking a brighter future.
