Without women, the house is silent,
No laughter in the kitchen's glow,
No wrapper's rustle, calm, compliant,
No gentle hand to make love grow.
Without women, the cradle's empty,
No lullaby to soothe the night,
No mother's prayer, so rich and plenty,
To keep the future burning bright.
Without women, the market's hollow,
No bargaining, no queenly grace,
No sister's smile for us to follow,
No lineage to keep our place.
Without women, the field is barren,
No seed preserved with patient art,
No soup that saves us from the charren,
No wisdom stitched into the heart.
Without women, our wars are endless,
No counsel soft to stay the gun,
No daughter's dream to make us friendless
To hatred's old and bitter sun.
Without women, the world is halved,
A single drum with muted tone,
A story poorly told, and calved
From wholeness, left to stand alone.
Without women, we cannot be,
For life itself begins in her,
She is the root, the branch, the tree,
The prayer, the hearth, the stirrer.
