Shehu Sani reveals tensions surrounding Emir Sanusi’s palace blockade by armed officers, tied to plans for appointing a district head in Bichi town, amid ongoing political and royal shifts in Kano.
Rights activist and former senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has hinted that the reason why armed security officers surrounded the Emir of Kano's palace was due to plans by the Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi to appoint a district head for Bichi town, causing tension in the ancient city.
The tension escalated early Friday morning when anti- riot police officers surrounded the Emir’s palace, beginning as early as 6 a.m.
The former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, was dethroned in May this year by the administration of the present governor, Abba Yusuf, while he was away and replaced with the reinstatement of the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was immediately moved to the Kofar Kudu palace.
Bayero later returned to the state and settled at the Nassarawa mini palace, resulting in divergent court cases and rulings, either supporting or opposing the state government’s decision.
However, commenting on the situation in a
post on his X handle, Senator Sani noted, “In the interest of peace, there should be serious restraint in the application of force, might, and power over the Kano emirship tussle.”
