Police Detain Protesters Marking EndSARS Anniversary in Lagos

The police have arrested and detained protesters marking the fourth anniversary of the October 2020 EndSARS protests at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos. The EndSARS movement sought to end police brutality, leading to the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Police Detain Protesters Marking EndSARS Anniversary in Lagos

The police have arrested and detained some protesters who converged on the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State to mark the fourth anniversary of the October 20, 2020, "EndSARSprotest," across the country.  
Young Nigerians protesting against police brutality had demonstrated across the country, calling for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, over alleged  brutality against innocent people.
However, although the police authorities  in difference to the demand,  disbanded SARS nationwide, but arrested and detained some of the youths, some of who lost their lives in the process.

Some of the protesters had refused to leave the streets, especially the tollgate which become a symbol of the protest.
Unknown soldiers had also, opened fire on the protesters, resulting in deaths, according to witnesses, even as the Federal Government denied the killings.
The Amnesty International had said at least 12 protesters were killed by the military during the crisis at the Toogate. 
On Sunday morning, which marked the 4th anniversary of the incident, some protesters gathered at the tollgate, singing and waving placards.
At the Tollgate on Sunday, anti- riot policicemen on ground tried to disperse the protesters by firing cannisters of teargas and  firing gunshots into the air in the process even as some of the protesters were arrested and taken to police stations for detention.  (Source: Weekend Trust)
