Former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi, has emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for the 2027 election.
Obi was the only candidate who had bought his forms as at the time of closure of purchase of forms by the party on Monday.
The development followed the closure of the party’s sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms on May 17, with Obi said to be the only aspirant who obtained his forms before the deadline elapsed.
This is coming amid ongoing political realignments within the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
The NDC had zoned its presidential slot to the South for only one term of four years before rotating it to the North in 2031.
Obi will now face the party's screening as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, after which his vice presidential candidate would be named from the North.
