The National Universities Commission, NUC, has granted licence to the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, to establish the Maria Assumpta University, MAUO.

The feat was announced by the archdiocese on Friday, July 24, 2026, in a post on it's Facebook page.

“The approval marks the successful completion of a rigorous, multi year process and authorizes the university to commence full academic activities.
“Since then, the Archdiocese has invested immense effort, resources, and sacrifice to meet all regulatory requirements.
“This included several verification visits by NUC officials to assess the proposed campuses, facilities, and administrative structures, ensuring compliance with national standards.
“The issuance of the licence confirms that the university’s physical structures, academic frameworks, and administrative organs are ready for take off.
“It also signals the Archdiocese’s readiness to launch academic programmes and welcome its first cohort of students,” it stated.
It further said that the journey towards the establishment of the University began in 2023 when, on July 26, the Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius I. Ugorji, accompanied by members of the university’s technical committee, submitted the formal Letter of Intent to the NUC Secretary in Abuja.
The Archdiocese further noted that, the Maria Assumpta University stands as another visionary initiative of Archbishop Ugorji, who seeks to offer the Church, the nation, and humanity an institution where young people can receive high quality tertiary education without losing their religious, moral, and cultural identity, pointing out that the institution
aimed to form a generation of Nigerian youths capable of competing favourably with their peers in leading institutions across the world.
It also, stressed that the achievement was a testament to the Archdiocese’s commitment to educational excellence as well as its dedication to shaping the future of young people through faith rooted, globally competitive learning.
