...Says NELFUND wants every student in the South East to access loan for their education
The Director General of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, Mr Akintude Sawyer, has assured students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, that they would soon access loans from the Fund to enable them pursue their varous course without much financial stress, as the technical hitches they earlier experienced had been resolved.
Sawyer spoke when he addressed students of various tertiary schools in Enugu, to assure them that students from the South East geopolitical zone were not excluded from the loan scheme.
Speaking while receiving the students Union of ESUT College of Medicine led by the President, Michael Eze and the General Secretary, Chidubem Nnamdi Mamah, Sawyer explained the basis of ELFUND, its goal to reach as many students as possible who are in need of the loan, as well as the process of application and the repayment process.
He further noted that "The repayment process begins two years after the recipient had completed his/ her National Youth Service Corps, NYSC or as soon as such an applicant got a job but was not mandated to pay if he/'she doesn't have a job yet."
According to Sawyer, "The repayment is done by your employer, so if you're employed, your employer pays 10% of your salary to NELFUND until the loan is completely repaid, and in the unfortunate event that you loose your job, the process stops until you get a new job."
Addressing the concerns of ESUT College of Medicine who explained that they were unable to access the NELFUNG Portal in particular, the Director General said, that "If there's even the slightest error in the data entry by the institution, the system automatically flags it as an error."
He, however, admitted that these errors were bound to happen as the programme was in its first year and institutions were still learning the process of registering their students.
He, then dedicated a staff of NELCUND who was on the entourage to the students and mandated him to resolve all issues raised or problems experienced by them as well as gave the students his telephone number in case they ran into more difficulties or challenges while trying to register with NELFUND.
