How Tinubu Ensured APC Chairman, Ganduje's Resignation

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, President Bola Tinubu may have for influenced the resignation of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and former governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, to pave the way for the emergence of another candidate from the North Central, in accordance with the original zoning policy of the party.

According to the zoning formula, the North Central should have produced the National Chairman instead of the North West from where Ganduje come from.
APC members from the North Central had protested the imposition of Alhaji Ganduje, who comes from the Northwest in contravention of the zoning policy of the party, hence Tinubu's decision to move against the immediate past chairman.
It was alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, was instrumental to Ganduje's resignation as he had impressed it on Tinubu, to correct the political imbalance, tilted against the North central geopolitical zone.
A former Director General of the APC and National Vice Chairman of the party for the Northwest, Salihu Lukman, resigned from his position in July 2023, citing concerns over the party's direction and leadership style under President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Lukman who was  a vocal critic of the party's deviation from its alleged progressive principles and advocated for internal democracy and adherence to the party's constitution as well as zoning policy, citing the imposition of Ganduje on the party as one of such examples of non-adherence to party's zoning policy and acts of impunity by the leadership.
According to Lukman then, the party leadership had abandoned its progressive principles and adapted the culture of centralized control.
After resigning from the APC, Lukman has been vocal about the need for a new political party that can provide a credible alternative to the current ruling party and is indeed among the political leaders working to form a coalition that could oust Tinubu from power in 2027.
However, sources told reporters that
President Tinubu had been insistent that Ganduje had to resign to correct the political imbalance in the North Central.
Presidential sources who spoke said,
“Ganduje was forced to resign in order to allow for the party to revert to its zoning formula on Friday.
“The President is insistent that in the countdown to the 2027 elections, the party must enforce all the rules and one of them is the zone that should occupy the seat of the national chairman.
“Ganduje has been told pointedly that he must resign by the President. And he has done just that.”
The former chairman had consistently boasted that he would not resign from the position despite the repeated calls, especially by the North Central, for him to vacate the seat.
