There was tragedy in Imo State on Thursday, following the killing of a Police Inspector and a complaint who were trailing a suspect at Mbaitolu area of the state.
It was said that three policemen from the Nwaorie Ubi Police Station in Mbaitolu, a suburb of Owerri town were trailing a suspect under investigation when they were waylaid by some gunmen at a fuel station, killing Inspector Okechukwu Eczema, from Onicha Enugu Ezike, in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, on the spot.
It was said that three policemen from the Nwaorie Ubi Police Station in Mbaitolu, a suburb of Owerri town were trailing a suspect under investigation when they were waylaid by some gunmen at a fuel station, killing Inspector Okechukwu Eczema, from Onicha Enugu Ezike, in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, on the spot.
This was even as pandemonium broke out Saturday evening following a shoot out in the Akwakuma area of Owerri, the state capital between some hoodlums anɗ security agents.
Details of what lead to the shootout is still very sketchy but as at press time, no life was lost.
However, on the killing of the Inspector, police sources said that the suspect whose name was being shielded for security reasons was said to have escaped police arrest on several occasions and failed to report after several invitations before the ugly development.
The detectives were traveling in a tricycle otherwise called keke and had branched into the fuel station to refill the tank when three motorbike riders each carrying a gun-bearing passenger entered and opened fire on the police officers, killing both the police inspector and the complainant of the case under investigation.
The other two policemen were however, said to have escaped the attack with bullet injuries.
Also, on Saturday evening, pandemonium broke out when some policemen guarding the residence of a parliamentarian were attacked by unknown gunmen even as a female passer-by who was returning home from her workplace was hit by stray bullets.
Owerri, the state capital, had been very tense of late following several threats of attack from alleged unknown gunmen in recent times.
