A leading presidential aspirant in the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Gregory Obi, says he would take a firm stand against criminal activities if elected president in 2027.
Obi spoke in an interview on Trust TV on Wednesday.
He criticised the era of fuel subsidy regime, noting it was deeply flawed and prone to abuse, just as he questioned the accuracy of the country’s reported fuel consumption.
According to him, the figures being churned out do not reflect the reality on the ground, even as available data suggests that Nigeria was not consuming the large volume of petrol usually claimed.
His words, “Subsidy is organised crime and I won’t allow any form of criminality as the President of Nigeria. The amount of fuel they say we consume cannot be consumed by this country, there’s empirical evidence.
“We are about the same as Pakistan; they have more roads, and we probably have the same number of vehicles, or they have even more, yet their fuel consumption is a third of ours, so who is drinking the balance?”
Comparing Pakistan with Nigeria further, Obi noted that both countries share similarities in population size and infrastructure, but Pakistan consumed far less fuel than Nigeria, adding that the
subsidy structure created opportunities for fraud and misuse, pointing out that such organized fraud would not be tolerated under his watch.
Furthermore, Obi also, maintained that beyond removing the subsidy, there was the aneed to properly examine fuel consumption figures and eliminate loopholes that allow manipulation within the system.
