Former Senate President David Mark May Emerge PDP Chairman
Pressure has continued on former Senate President, Senator7 Hugo David Mark to step in as substantive national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Former Military President and Mark's former principal and two other former ministers of Defence were among those who have mounted pressure on the former Senate President to serve as national chairman of the PDP in a bid to stabilise the party, but Mark was said to have insisted that the party's constitution should be amended to enable him serve in substantive and NOT acting capacity to complete the tenure of Dr Iyorcha Ayu
before a national convention.
He was said to be mindful of the legal issues that have trailed the leadership tussle in the party.
Mark who had earlier served as minister under the military regime was the longest serving Senate President under the PDP administration. He is from Benue, in the North Central zone which has been agitating for the acting national chairman, Amb Illiya Damagum, to vacate the seat and allow for Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s replacement.
"As much as Oga is open to step in and stabilise the party, he would not want to preside over a factionalised party.
"He also, does not want to come in and stabilise the party, only to be asked to step aside for someone else to step in substantive capacity. Some of Ogas in the military, who he respect have been piling pressure on him to take the position and stabilise the opposition party, because of the belief that he can’t be pushed around by the various camps and interest groups within the party, which is what the party needs at this time," the sources added.
The tussle between the camps loyal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Federal Capital Territory, FCT, minister Nyesom Wike has caused a split within the party. The split was recently reflected in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC
