Former Code of Conduct Tribunal Chairman Remanded At Kuje Correctional Centre

A Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court in Maitama has remanded the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT,  Danladi Umar, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application.
The former CCT chairman tried President Bola Tinubu on  a three-count criminal charge filed against him by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, over alleged false assets declaration and allegedly operating 10 foreign bank accounts while serving as the Governor of Lagos State (1999-2007), in violation of Section 7 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act in 2011.
Umar was charged before Justice Peter Kekemeke, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on four counts bordering on allegedly using his former position to obtain undue advantage while serving as CCT chairman.
During the proceedings, counsel for the EFCC asked the court to fix a date for trial and requested that Umar be kept in custody until the case moves forward.
Umar 's Counsel had informed the court that a bail application had already been filed and urged the judge to consider granting their client bail.
However, the prosecution said it had only just received the application and needed time to study it before responding.
After hearing both sides, Justice Kekemeke adjourned the matter until July 15 to hear the bail application and  ordered that Umar should remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre until a decision is made on his request for bail.
The former CCT chairman had  tried Tinubu on a three - count criminal charge but dismissed the case brought by the Federal Government on November 30, 2011,  describing it as “trial by ambush."
Then President Jonathan wanted to appeal the verdict, but the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, intervened. Tinubu's lead Counsel, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, won the tough political battle for the current president.
