Eminent Professor of Communication Studies and journalist, Professor Idowu Sobowale, has died at the age of 85.
Sobowale died in the early hours of Thursday, October 8, 2026, according to a statement by a member of his family, Akinniyi Sowunmi, in a statement titled, “Transition to Glory.”
According to Sowunmi, “This is a very sad day for us in the Communication Community in Nigeria and especially for us at the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals in Nigeria.”
He further described Sobowale as “our father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON,” adding that he “joined the saints triumphant” on Thursday morning.
The family said details of the late scholar’s funeral arrangements would be announced later.
Sobowale was widely recognised for his contributions to communication scholarship and Nigeria’s media profession, as he groomed most Media practitioners especially those who passed through the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ and the University of Lagos, UNILAG.
