The military suffered a major set back at Damboa, Borno State on Tuesday, when some soldiers were killed in an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists while moving from the town to Maiduguri.
This was even as the former General Officer Commanding, GOC, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General A.G Haruna, has handed over the division to his successor, Brigadier - General U. V. Unachukwu after a ceremony in Maiduguri.
The handing over ceremony took place on Tuesday as the casualties were recorded.
The incident occured when an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, planted on the road exploded as the troops were on the way to Maiduguri town.
A resident Damboa who spoke to reporters said, "The Boko Haram attacked them (the soldiers) using the IED.
"Twenty six soldiers were critically wounded,; many others slightly injured. The wounded ones were taken to 7 Division Hospital in a chopper (helicopter) for immediate treatment while the bodies of those who could not make it to the hospital were deposited in the hospital."
