A 49 year old father of six has been killed by yet to be known assailants in Enugu State.
The victim, Ikechukwu Onoima, from Unuodoko, in Umuogbo Ulor, Enugu- Ezike, Igboeze North Local Government Area of the state, was killed during a ceremony to mark the seven native weeks (28 days) of the death of a neighbour's mother in the area.
Onoima's mother, Mrs Priscilla Onoima, nee Ugwu, and his widow, Kanayo, told Southeast Post online newspaper that Ikechukwu a.k.a Aikohmu, left their family house in the evening of the fateful day to attend the ceremony at Hyacinth Aji's residence and never returned.
"I saw my son, who was a welder at about 3pm five days ago. He was preparing to attend the ceremony, which we also attended. He came to me to inquire whether I had any cooked food so that he could feed his dog, before leaving for the Izu Asa ceremony for the dead woman and I told him I had none.
"He was full of regrets that he was about to leave the house without feeding the dog, even as everybody in the house would attend the same ceremony, meaning that the dog would be hungry, throughout the day.
"He left before me because, I went there around 7 pm but returned almost immediately because I didn't want to eat or drink anything. It was the next day that the wife told me that he hadn't returned from the function. We later recovered his dead body outside the fence of the house of the host. He was an executive member of our church parish. He was also, a member of the local vigilante group- The Neighbourhood Watch.
"Up till this moment, the Neighbourhood Watch has not reacted to his murder; the police have yet to begin any investigative activities, despite the fact that the matter was reported to the police. Something is fishy but there is nothing we can do again now," the deceased's mother, Pristilla noted.
The deceased's family said that three of Ikechukwu's children were yet to grow up as two were still attending the junior secondary school, while only one was in Senior Secondary School.
