Enugu Petrol Tanker Fire Update: 18 killed, 13 rescued

No fewer than 18 persons were roasted alive on Saturday, when a petrol
tanker crashed in Enugu while 13 others were rescued.
These were contained in a statement signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Olusegun Ogungbemide.

He said that the crash involved 17 vehicles, including a petroleum-laden tanker, a water tanker, 15 other vehicles, and a tricycle.
Altogether, 31 people were involved in the accident.
According to the FRSC, the tanker, loaded with premium motor spirit, experienced brake failure, lost control, and collided with other vehicles, igniting a fire that destroyed 11 of them.
“This is a tragic reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to road safety regulations,” Ogungbemide said.
He further noted that 10 victims sustained injuries, three escaped unharmed, while 18 others were burnt beyond recognition.
The rescue operation, led by the FRSC and joined by Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, alongside other officials, ensured traffic was diverted to facilitate movement along the affected route, even as evacuation of the burnt vehicles was ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has commiserated with the families of the victims and advised motorists to use alternative routes.
“We urge all road users to exercise caution and prioritize safety at all times,” he added.
