State Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Mrs Margaret Adamu, announced this on Monday at a news conference in Makurdi the state capital, saying that any Parent-Teacher Association, PTA, of any school seeking to organise extra lessons for pupils must obtain approval from the ministry.
She, however, noted that such lessons based on approval should not be made compulsory for the beneficiaries.
According to Mrs Adamu, proprietors of schools, principals and heads of schools must ensure strict compliance with all education policies and guidelines, as defaulters would face appropriate punishments.

“There shall be no lessons after regular school hours. Any PTA requesting extra lessons must seek approval from the Ministry and must not make it compulsory," she warned.
The commissioner also directed schools to use only approved main textbooks for teaching, while prohibiting restricted or customised non-transferable books, just as she warned that the cost of textbooks must not be embedded in school fees, hence parents were free to purchase approved books from schools or elsewhere.

She further warned schools remained banned from holding graduation ceremonies for learners in Early Childhood Care, Development and Education, ECCDE, Lower Basic and Middle Basic classes, limiting such ceremonies to exit classes such as Basic 9, SS3 and Technical 3, pointing out that
schools must not allow barbaric birthday celebrations in which pupils manhandle celebrants, while directing them to enforce the ban on bullying, intimidation, harassment, hazing and all forms of violence among pupils.
