Bandits Kill Five Traders, Four Vigilantes, one other In Zamfara
Ten persons including four vigilante members, five traders and a commercial motorcyclist have killed by bandits in Zamfara State.
The victims were killed in an ambush by suspected bandits along the Gusau-Magami road in the state.
Apart from the five traders, the vigilante members included an operative of the Community Protection Guards, CPG.
According to one of the community leaders, two of the deceased traders were from Zonai village, while three others hailed from Magami community.
It was learnt that the tragedy could have been averted if the travellers had waited for a scheduled military escort.
Military sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, explained that the Armoured Personnel Carrier, APC, usually deployed to escort traders along the route had been taken to Gusau for routine maintenance, adding however that, the traders, anxious to continue their journey, opted to rely on local hunters for protection instead of waiting for the military escort vehicle to be repaired.
