Abacha's Daughter Gumsu, Fires Back At Babangida, Calling Him A Weakling In A Veiled Post Over June 12 Annulment

Late former Head of State's daughter,
Gumsu Sani Abacha, has lampooned ex- Military President, Ibrahim Babangida over claims that it was Abacha who actually annulled the June 12, 1993, election won by late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

Gumsu in her post called someone a “weakling.” according to a Naija247news report.
Abacha's daughter's reaction came against the backdrop of claims by Babangida in a book that presented to the public, blaming her father for the annulment of the election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll.
According to Naija247news, Gumsu’s post, shared on her Instagram page, did not mention any names but was interpreted as a direct response to IBB’s recent comments.
She wrote, “Weakling,” alongside a photo of a lion, a symbol often associated with strength and dominance. The post has since gone viral, with many Nigerians speculating about its target.
Naija247news gathered that IBB, in a recent interview, shifted blame for the June 12 annulment to the late General Abacha, who served as his Chief of Army Staff at the time.
“Abacha was the one who advised me to annul the election. He said it was necessary to prevent a crisis,” IBB noted. The statement has reignited debates about one of Nigeria’s most controversial political decisions.
Naija247news understands that Gumsu’s post has drawn mixed reactions, with some Nigerians applauding her for defending her father’s legacy and others criticizing her for wading into the decades-old controversy. “This is a classic case of history repeating itself. The children of these leaders are now fighting their fathers’ battles,” a social media user commented.
According to Naija247news, the June 12 annulment remains a sore point in Nigeria’s political history. The election, won by business mogul Moshood Abiola, was annulled by IBB, leading to widespread protests and a prolonged political crisis. Abacha later took power in a coup and ruled until his death in 1998.
Naija247news reports that IBB’s attempt to shift blame has been met with skepticism by many Nigerians, who view both leaders as complicit in the annulment. “IBB and Abacha were two sides of the same coin. They both played a role in truncating Nigeria’s democracy,” said a political analyst who spoke to Naija247news.
Meanwhile as the controversy unfolds, Naija247news gathered that Gumsu’s post has added a new dimension to the ongoing debate about accountability and Nigeria’s democratic journey.
