Steven Gerrard mobbed by Rangers fans as video shows wild scenes as he drives up to Ibrox

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was mobbed by supporters before his side's clash with St Mirren on Saturday afternoon.

Thousands gathered to greet the team as they close in on the Premiership title despite strict lockdown rules forbidding large gatherings.

But that didn't stop fans letting off smoke bombs and flares as ahead of the clash with the Buddies at Ibrox.

Rangers will be champions on Sunday if they defeat St Mirren and Celtic drop points against Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday.

And a video that appears to be from inside the Rangers manager's car show the frenzied scenes as he arrived at the stadium.

Fans can be heard shouting Gerrard's name and tapping the window with police on hand to keep supporters off the road.

It comes after Gerrard urged supporters to show caution as they closed in on a historic title success and rivals Celtic's domestic dominance over Scottish fotoball.

He said: “I think there are two sides to this (the fireworks against Livingston)."It’s fantastic to see the fans back smiling and in a good place. The fans have been through a lot at this football club and if anyone deserves to be in a good place at the moment and really excited and dreaming it’s our support.RELATED ARTICLES

At the same time, they’ve just got to be careful because things were coming on to the pitch, the fireworks were dropping on to the pitch.

"By all means enjoy it and really enjoy this moment and this time, of course, but I don’t want my players dodging fireworks while the game’s going on, that’s for sure.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "About 10 am today, 6 March 2021 a large number of supporters gathered outside Ibrox Stadium and a number of pyrotechnic devices were set off.

"I would remind supporters that in line with current Scottish Government Coronavirus guidelines, all gatherings are currently prohibited and we would urge members of the public to comply with these restrictions.

"Our priority is public safety and an appropriate policing plan was in place and officers engaged with those present to explain and encourage compliance with restrictions." @Record_Sport
