Enugu: DPO In Soup Over N10,000 Bribe

Inspector General of Police

An Enugu based lawyer, Ikechukwu Odo, has petitioned against the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Igbo Eze North police station, accusing him of allegedly detaining his clients over a land matter that was pending in court and collecting now in hot "okro" soup for allegedly detaining a father and his son over land matter that is pending before the court and collecting N10,000 for their bail.
The DPO who is now being investigated over the allegation was said to have knowingly, detained a 70 year old man, Elias Eze and his son, Emmanuel at the Enugu Ezike police station, over a land matter in suit number EZ/22M/2019 pending before the High Court, Enugu Ezike.
In the petition to the state police Commissioner, Ahmad Abdulraham, titled, "Petition over unlawful arrest, detention and prosecution: an appeal for transfer for a thorough, discreet investigation by Elias Eze and Mr Emmanuel Eze against Pastor Jeremiah Ossai," and dated August 18, read in part, "We have been briefed and our professional services retained by Mr Elias Eze and Emmanuel Eze, both of Imufu, Enugu Ezike, Igboeze Local Government Area, who shall hereinafter, be referred to as our clients and on whose behalf and instructions we forward this petition, hereunder to you.
"That Mr Elias Exe is the biological father of Emmanuel Eze... That Pastor Jeremiah Ossai ... who shall be shall be referred to as the suspect... is a native of Okpo in Enugu State but resides at Ogrute, had purportedly sold a parcel of land belonging to Emmanuel Eze without his approval and when our client resisted that, the suspect laid a false complaint against them at the Police Area Command, Udenu, which led to both of our clients being arrested and detained. One of our clients was detained for four days.
"That during the arrest, detention and interrogation of our clients, the Area Commander interviewed both parties and after full investigations, found out that the matter was purely a land case.
"That the Area Commander, Udenu, admonished the parties and told
Pastor Ossai categorically that he, the Area Commander, does not approve of laying a false criminal allegations against our clients, and advised the parties for a possible and amicable settlement.
"That, after the advise of the Area Commander, the suspects did not receive the advice in good faith but started hatching the plan of how to harass our clients with further incarceration and when we got the idea, we applied for the enforcement of his fundamental right at the High Court of Justice, Enugu Ezike and served on parties... in suit No EZ/22M/2019, Mr Emmanuel Eze Vs Pastor Jeremiah Ossai, & 5 others. The said suit is still pending in court.
"That Mr Emmanuel Eze also coupled his step by filing and serving a civil suit against Pastor Jeremiah Ossai (and his accomplice) in the Customary Court, Ogrute Enugu Ezike in suit No OCC/7L/2019, which is still pending in the court and hearing has reached an advanced stage when the Chairman of the thought it wise, Suo Motu, advised parties to attempt settlement out of court to avoid judgement being given in a land matter which concerns and relates to parties that are very closely related and knit, except Pastor Jeremiah, who is relatively a distant acquaintance to the family of our clients through Tobias.
"That our clients conceded and settlement proceedings continued and progressed unabated to the stage when grievances condensed, concretised and became certain.
"That despite the pendency of the suit No. OCC/7L/2019, and in total disregard to proceedings of this court, the suspects made further report against our clients at the police Divisional Headquarters, Enugu Ezike Division.
"That upon the report, our clients were arrested, grudgingly granted bail when our clients paid N5000 each to secure their bail.
"That the DPO, Enugu Ezike was made clearly to know that this matter is effectively pending before a court of competent jurisdiction but propelled by the gratification from the lawyer to the suspects, the DPO is still warming up to still arraign our clients over the same issue of the sale of land which is the subject matter of the suit in court, threatening to charge our clients who did not receive any money under advanced fee fraud..."
