University of Ibadan Orders Three-Week Break Following Tuition Fee Hike Protests

The University of Ibadan in Oyo State has directed its students to embark on a three-week break, following a protest over increased tuition fees. This decision was announced just 24 hours after students took to the streets on Friday to express their dissatisfaction with the fee hike.

According to reports, the protest, which began on Friday morning, led to the disruption of academic and non-academic activities across the university. In response, the university administration, after a meeting with the student union leadership, decided to implement the break.

In a statement signed by the Registrar, G.O. Saliu, the institution explained that the break would allow students to complete their online registration. The memo, obtained by the Southwest Post on Saturday, also indicated that the first semester exams for the 2023/2024 academic session are scheduled to begin on Monday, September 23, 2024. The registration portal is set to close on Friday, September 20, 2024.

The statement also directed that all students residing in the university hostels must vacate the premises by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2024. It further warned that students who fail to complete their registration by the deadline will not be allowed to participate in the exams.

Saliu emphasized the importance of the break, stating, “The Vice-Chancellor has approved a three-week break for University of Ibadan students, effective from Saturday, August 31, 2024, until Friday, September 20, 2024. Residences will reopen to students from 12 noon on Friday, September 20, 2024. This period should provide ample time for students to finalize their online registration.”
