Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Released Pending Trial After Arrest in France

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was released by French authorities on Wednesday after being detained over allegations that the platform was used for illegal activities. Durov, who is expected to appear in court tomorrow, will face a judge who will decide whether to formally investigate him for crimes related to the app’s usage.

The 39-year-old Russian-born billionaire was arrested on Saturday, August 24, upon his arrival at Le Bourget airport in France from Azerbaijan on a private plane. His arrest followed an investigation initiated by the French national fraud office on July 8, which is looking into criminal activities allegedly facilitated by Telegram. These include drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering, distribution of child pornography, and non-cooperation with law enforcement.

In response to the allegations, Telegram has reiterated its commitment to complying with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act. The platform’s spokesperson stated, “It is absurd to hold a platform and its owners responsible for how others misuse it.”

Under French law, Durov was held in custody for 96 hours, the maximum period allowed before charges must be brought. His court appearance tomorrow will determine the next steps in this legal matter.
