SSANU Slams FG Over WAEC, NECO Age Requirements Policy

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has criticised the Federal Government's education policy requiring prospective candidates of West African Examination Council, WAEC, and their National Examination Council, NECO, to attain 18 - years.

SSANU asked the government to suspend the policy by the federal ministry of education, describing it as backward and limiting, adding that, it was capable of short-changing students and their parents.
Speaking in an interview with reporters shortly after the end of a meeting of principal officers of the association in Abuja, the President, Mohammed Ibrahim, asked the Federal Government to make further consultations before implementing the policy to avoid crisis in the education sector.
There had been concerns over the policy since the policy was introduced by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, last week.
Mamman, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, had noted that individuals under 18 years would no longer be allowed to take part in NECO and WAEC examinations.
He further noted that the Federal Government had already directed WAEC and NECO to enforce the 18-year age requirements for candidates seeking to take their exams.
