FG Inaugurates 10- Member Committee To Enforce Supreme Court Judgement On LG Autonomy
The Federal Government has inaugurated a 10-member committee to enforce the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024, ruling that grants financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local governments. SGF Senator George Akume established the committee to implement this landmark verdict.
The Federal Government has inaugurated a 10-member committee to enforce the recent landmark judgement of the Supreme Court granting financial autonomy to the 774 local governments across the country.
The apex court had on July 11, 2024, declared that it was unconstitutional for state governors to hold onto funds meant for LG administration in the country.
However, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, has set up an inter-ministerial committee to implement the verdict, according to a statement on Tuesday, signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen.
“The committee’s primary goal is to ensure that local governments are granted full autonomy, allowing them to function effectively without interference from state governments.
“This move is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to give appropriate implementation to the provisions of the Constitution, which recognizes local governments as the third tier of government," he added.
The Supreme Court had in its judgement read by Justice Emmanuel Agim directed that Local Government allocations from the Federation Account should be paid directly to them henceforth, and not to state/ local government joint accounts.
Justice Agim pointed out that the state governors’ retention of the monies meant for the Local Governments truncates the latter’s activities and ordered the immediate compliance of the judgement, stating that no state government should be paid monies meant for Local Governments.
