Doctors in Anambra Suspend Strike After Three Days Following Kidnapping Incident

Doctors in Anambra State have suspended their strike, which lasted three days, after the release of Dr. Steven Eze, who had been abducted. The strike, which began on August 23, was prompted by the kidnapping of Dr. Eze on August 15 in Ihiala Local Government Area. Initially, robbers demanded a ransom of N40 million, later reduced to N30 million.

The strike led to significant patient suffering, as all private and government hospitals in the state were closed. Many patients, including those needing urgent medical care, were unable to access services. Regina Caeli Hospital had to cancel a free medical program due to the strike.

On August 25, the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) announced Dr. Eze’s release and the resumption of clinical services. The NMA thanked the people of Anambra for their support and expressed hope that such a situation would not recur.

In related news, lawyers in Anambra State also experienced disruptions due to the kidnapping of their colleague, Mr. Chukwubu Ikemu Azoro, by gunmen in May. The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) had called for a halt in court activities until Azoro’s release, echoing the broader security challenges in the region.

Governor Charles Soludo’s actions against armed groups have been met with mixed reactions, with some praising his efforts while others believe they have exacerbated the security situation in the state.
