APC Youths Demand Immediate Removal of NNPCL Boss Mele Kyari Over $6.8 Billion Debt
Members of the ruling APC, along with the APC Youth Solidarity Network, have called for the removal of Mele Kyari, head of NNPCL, amid revelations of a $6.8 billion debt burden on the oil company.
Members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), supported by the APC Youth Solidarity Network, have called for the immediate removal of Mele Kyari, the head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). The demand follows recent revelations that the oil company is burdened with a $6.8 billion debt.
The call for Kyari’s sacking came after NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, confirmed on Sunday that the company is under immense financial pressure due to the high cost of fuel supply. This admission also clarified that the ongoing fuel shortage in Nigeria is a result of the company’s significant debt to international oil suppliers.
During a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, the Chairman of the APC Youth League, Olalekan Isaac, expressed strong disapproval of Kyari’s leadership, describing it as “full of leadership failures.” Isaac criticized the NNPCL for initially denying the existence of the debt and accused the company of lacking transparency in its operations.
“We, the APC Youth Solidarity Network, strongly believe that it is time for Mr. Mele Kyari to take responsibility for this lack of leadership. He should leave his position to save our country from the shame and ridicule of the world,” Isaac stated. He added that Kyari’s extended tenure has brought disgrace to both the APC and the Nigerian people, and urged for his immediate removal to restore the nation’s credibility.
The APC Youth Solidarity Network’s demands highlight growing frustration within the ruling party regarding the management of Nigeria’s oil sector under Kyari’s leadership. The group’s statement reflects a broader concern about the direction of the NNPCL and its impact on the country’s economy.
