Pirates, Berkane To Arrive Uyo Wednesday For CAF Confed Cup Finals

The two finalists for the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, Orlando Pirates of South Africa and RSB Berkane of Morocco are expected in Uyo ahead of the May 20 match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Mr Paul Bassey, General Coordinator, Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the finals, made this known on Tuesday in an interactive session with journalists in Uyo.

Bassey, who is also the Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom on Sports, said this to newsmen in Uyo on Tuesday, adding that the match would be played on May 20 by 8.00 p.m.

“The LOC has established contact with the camps of both teams and I can confirm that the teams will be arriving Uyo tomorrow (Wednesday).

“As per the directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), I can confirm to you that kick-off for the match is at 8:00 p.m. and we at the LOC are perfectly poised to make it a memorable occasion that the entirety of Africa will be proud of,” he said.

Pirates would be seeking a second success in African football after winning the Champions League in 1995.

Also, Berkane, who are the defending champions, would be making their third appearance in the final when the finals get underway in Uyo on Friday.

A tripartite security meeting for CAF-NFF-LOC would hold on Tuesday prior to Friday's match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium where the pitch had been described by FIFA Pitch Consultant, Jorge, as perfect for a good game of football.

The match would be the Soweto Giants’ (Pirates) first ever encounter with “The Orange Boys” (RSB Berkane).

Both teams are seeking their second major continental title.
