President Buhari Appoints New Service Chiefs

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed new service chiefs for the military after accepting the immediate resignation of the former occupants of the positions.

These were contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina on Tuesday, January 26, 2021.

The new service shiefs include the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Major-General Leo Irabor, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Naval Staff, CNS, Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo and the Chief of Air Staff, CAS, Air Vice Marshal I.O Amao.

The Southeast geopolitical zone was not represented as usual in the new postings of the Military High Command. 

Buhari had earlier accepted the immediate resignation of the former service chiefs, and their retirement from the various services.

Those who resigned as well as retired from the military with immediate effect included the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; COAS, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; the CNS, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and CAS, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

President Buhari thanked the outgoing service chiefs for what he described as their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,” and wished them well in their future endeavours.

Buhari also congratulated the new service chiefs, and urged them to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities.
