15 security personnel killed as Boko Haram attack Borno State officials

No fewer than 15 security men including soldiers and policemen were killed by Boko Haram terrorists yesterday, when they attacked the convoy of government officials at Baga town Friday.

Those killed included three soldiers, eight policemen and four Civilian JTF personnel.

The deceased were ambushed at Baga town four days  after an army colonel, C.D Bako, and three other soldiers were killed by same terrorists in another ambush in the state.

The attacked officials, according to sources familiar with the incident, were heading to Baga town ahead of government’s planned return of internally displaced persons, IDPs, from Maiduguri to their camps, hence several soldiers, policemen and officials of the  Civilian JTF were deployed as escorts to the government officials.

However, the convoy ran into an ambush by Boko Haram at a point known as Korochara, about two kilometres from the base of the Multi-National Joint Task Force on the way to Baga from Monguno.

“Three soldiers, eight policemen, four C-JTF members died on the spot as the insurgents rained bullets on the unsuspecting members of the convoy at about 2.05 pm,” an official of the Borno state government told reporters on the condition of anonymity.

Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, who is expected to supervise the arrival of the IDPs at Baga, had left Maiduguri earlier in the day via a military chopper.

The Borno State government and the security agencies whose personnel were affected are yet to officially comment on the attack.
